F-1 Student Status, OPT and CPT in Huntington Beach
This page is for international students in Huntington Beach who hold or are seeking F-1 status, including students at Golden West College, Coastline College and nearby universities, and for those moving from school to work through OPT, CPT or a change of status.
F-1 status brings strict rules on enrollment, online classes and employment. Small mistakes, such as an unauthorized job or dropping below full-time units, can create lasting problems. Recent federal changes have added new uncertainty.
Below is a plain-language overview of current F-1 requirements, work authorization options, recent policy changes and how an immigration attorney can help when issues arise. Every case is different.
Maintaining F-1 Status
F-1 students must enroll full-time, make normal progress toward their program, keep a valid passport and Form I-20, and report changes of address to their Designated School Official (DSO) within 10 days.
At community colleges such as Golden West College, full-time generally means at least 12 units in fall and spring semesters. Federal rules limit how many online or distance-learning units count toward full-time enrollment, typically one class or three credits per term.
A drop below full-time without DSO authorization, unauthorized employment or failure to report can cause the SEVIS record to be terminated. Reinstatement or a new I-20 may be possible, but outcomes are uncertain.
- Enroll full-time and attend in-person classes as required
- Get DSO authorization before reducing course load
- Keep the I-20 travel signature current before trips abroad
- Report address changes within 10 days
Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
CPT is employment that is an integral part of a program's curriculum, such as a required internship or practicum. It is authorized by the school's DSO, not USCIS, and must be noted on the I-20 before work begins.
Students usually must complete one full academic year in status before using CPT, unless their graduate program requires it immediately. Twelve months or more of full-time CPT eliminates eligibility for post-completion OPT.
Optional Practical Training (OPT) and STEM OPT
Post-completion OPT allows up to 12 months of work directly related to a student's field of study. Students apply on Form I-765 after the DSO recommends OPT in SEVIS. The filing window opens 90 days before the program end date and closes 60 days after.
Students in qualifying science, technology, engineering and math fields may apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension with an E-Verify employer and a training plan on Form I-983.
OPT students may accumulate no more than 90 days of unemployment during the initial 12 months, with an additional 60 days during STEM OPT. Exceeding these limits can end F-1 status.
